an American artist and educator living in Daytona Beach, Florida USA. Working in photography, video, and installation, I use the camera to document real and constructed versions of the everyday on the street and in the studio to explore truth and representation, cultural identity, and the collective memory of the eastern world. Drawing on similar themes, I also collaborate with my wife Unum Babar on site-specific projects related to the city, nature, and urban life. In the classroom, I establish hybrid modes of learning that help students form independent connections between theory and practice, the self and the Other, past and present identities, and digital and analog processes. my neighborhood in Lahore, camera and tripod in hand, a local elder man stopped me to ask what I was doing. I explained I was an artist, documenting the streets to later edit into a video. With great concern, he asked “Will your video be positive or negative?” This encounter posed to me a valid as well as difficult question: do outsiders like myself accurately depict societies abroad or do we choose to perpetuate the narrative we are most accustomed to?A city is defined by the people who live, work and breathe in it, who build and shape it. Through all the concrete and gravel, hot black tar roads, hardened steel support beams, red brick and mortar, Monstera and Eucalyptus rooted in between dusty lawns and towering walls, repeated patterns about time and place emerge. Patterns like these are the heartbeat of any city, but the stories most often told fail to acknowledge them. This work investigates the line between fact and fiction within representation by looking at the camera as an artifice. Through collecting items of Pakistani popular culture, local newspaper clippings, Urdu novels, etc. and then photographing them in the studio, I create scenes that are reminiscent of an anthropological study. In juxtaposing these still-lifes with photographic documentations of the street, connections between the real and the constructed are challenged. Displaying the image against both natural and man-made materials melds their surfaces into one, and these new objects become a memorial to a fading past. https://mattkushan.com/New-Land Tue, 22 Dec 2020 11:47:52 +0000 Matt Kushan https://mattkushan.com/New-Land New Land New Land (excerpt), Future of History: A Group Exhibition of Art and Technology, Boston Cyberarts, Boston, MA In 1903, W.E.B. DuBois, an African-American sociologist, coined the phrase “double consciousness” in his book The Souls of Black Folk, a term widely used to describe black subjectivity. He wrote, “It is a peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity.” The East has traditionally been subjected to similar social oppression: looking at itself through the lens of the foreigner, considering itself the ‘Other’. The camera, a device that claims to record objectively, has played a large part in this through the actions of its operators. Many have traveled to places such as the Middle East and/or South Asia with pre-conceived notions, and brought back their versions of these communities through images of war, corrupt governments, and terrorist organizations. This work aims to challenge the mainstream western narrative by providing a view devoid of political opinion. As an American citizen living in Lahore, Pakistan for three years, I have documented daily life on the streets of my neighborhood. It draws upon our personal intercultural relationship and the differences with which we, as a Pakistani woman and an American man, understand the world. Our observations of the nuances of the city were made following a repetitive, daily commute to the studio situated in the historic Barras Market. By abstracting repeated color schemes and recreating existing surfaces, we have directed attention to the uniformity and noiselessness of the city of Glasgow in direct contrast to the chaos of Lahore. This intersection is explored within three major themes: nature, objects and architecture as well as through traditional and new media, and highlights the thin line between nostalgia and reality. <img (Paivasta) is a socially engaged public art project made in collaboration with Unum Babar and Glasgow-based creative studio Pidgin Perfect that combines the unique and also diverse practice of each artist, sparking an intercultural and international conversation about public green spaces in the subcontinent. The work consists of 8 permanent artworks for Bagh-e- Jinnah (Lawrence Gardens) in Lahore, Pakistan. The artworks reference, and have a resemblance to, the heritage of Bagh-e-Jinnah and the places and events that take place across the gardens. The central artwork is a significant marble ground piece located near the Quaid-e-Azam Library which takes the form of an Islamic star, directing people on seven routes across the park towards undiscovered spaces and stunning examples of Flora. The destination of each of the seven routes is marked by a marble seat, crafted and sited to encourage introspection, solitude, contemplation. From the Diplomatic Enclave in Islamabad to the local streets of Lahore, all domestic spaces employ certain methods of security against the outside public. These security measures, however, do not escape local cultural aesthetics. Characterized through the use of excessive colors and patterns, and a general chaos of materials, electric wires, greenery, lazy hacks and advertisement posters, they act as camouflage and a distraction from the grim reality of imminent danger Camouflage is a collaborative project featuring Unum Babar, for an exhibition marking the inauguration of the New Residence of the Dutch Ambassador in Islamabad.
